Big Wide World of Editing

Registration April 1-10
Monday April 15 through April 21, 2019

Take your women's fiction manuscript (finished or not) through this editing workshop. Work on the overall story concept, judge the best use of sentences to deliver your story, and then scour for the right words in the right places. Join us for fun and insight, led by these three teachers.

Macro Editing: Focusing the Big Picture
After drafting, we wordsmiths are eager to reread our work and start tinkering with the wording that enhances its spell. That’s not the best place to start revising, however—those sentences you're perfecting may not even be there in the end. In this workshop, Kathryn Craft will talk about ways to stand back from your work to ensure that its structural elements and broadest arcs are aligning to tell the story you intended to tell. Participants will leave with a greater appreciation of the way a developmental edit allows a deeper dive into your story, with a practical checklist in hand that can be used time and again.

Kathryn Craft is the award-winning author of two novels from Sourcebooks, The Art of Falling and The Far End of Happy, and the author of chapters in Author in Progress and The Complete Handbook of Novel Writing from Writers Digest Books. Her twelve years as a freelance developmental editor at Writing-Partner.com follows a nineteen-year career as a dance critic. Long a leader in the southeastern Pennsylvania writing scene, Kathryn leads writing workshops and retreats, and blogs at Writers in the Storm and Writer Unboxed. www.kathryncraft.com

Tackling the Tricks of Self-editing
If it sounds like writing, it needs to be rewritten. Explore the different self-editing techniques used by seasoned professionals. Discern what options in sentence structures could give your writing more marketability.
Karen (K.S.) Jones is an award-winning author. Her debut novel, Shadow of the Hawk has won multiple awards, including the 2016 WILLA Literary Award, the 2015 Literary Classics International Book Award, the 2015 Chaucer Award, and the 2016 RONE Award. Her second book, a mid-grade sci-fi/fantasy titled Black Lightning, was the recipient of the 2017 Literary Classics International Book Award, as well as a Readers' Favorite finalist. And in 2014, she won first place in Southern Writers Best Short Fiction contest. Karen has just completed a Women's Fiction Historical, which is currently on submission. She writes from her home in the Texas Hill Country where she lives with her husband and three dogs.

Overused Words in Writing

"Just what do you mean by overused word? I just like to write. That should just be enough." Well … maybe for the slush pile. Overused words are tricky to spot. Learn a method to hunt for them and then use the search as a springboard to tighten and elevate a sentence so that it is indispensable. This lesson will also suggest procedures to explore more meaning beyond a commonly used word. Take for example the word “beautiful.” How many times do you use it in your writing? Can rewriting offer a more distinct or unique description? Join me with your magnifying glass and we'll look at your wording.

Brigitte Doss-Johnson has organized several workshops for Women's Fiction Writer's Association. Her interest is to teach writers more about writing so they have more choices. She lives with her husband and fur babies as her three children have their own lives. She has several manuscripts and someday, she'll feel they are ready to query. Meanwhile, she wants to keep learning about the craft and art of writing.
