Plotting Characters

with  Sandra SG Wong

REGISTRATION DATES: March 17 - June 6, 2025
WORKSHOP DATE: June 8, 2025 at 1 PM ET
REGISTRATION FEE: FREE for all in celebration of Women's Fiction Day!

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

"Plot-driven" and "character-driven" are often positioned as opposing methods of fiction writing. But why do these approaches to narrative need to be in opposition? This hands-on workshop takes participants through exercises designed to create compelling and plausible plots using detailed character creation. Whether participants are at the start of a writing project, or somewhere in the murky middle, this approach can help jumpstart new ideas and perspectives to get writers to The End. Participants are encouraged to bring a WIP, their thinking caps, and whatever they need to take notes for themselves.

SYLLABUS:

June 8: This 75-minute workshop consists of discussion regarding plot, character, and setting, along with 2 guided writing exercises. There are no required outside readings, although discussion of books, stories, and other media do occur. Participants will be asked to work on characterization through 2 guided exercises. The first is a warmup exercise, using media chosen by each participant; the second is a deep dive into a chosen character from their respective works-in- progress.
